Chairman of Rochford District Council, Cllr Robin Dray
Following the Discover 2020 Festival Children and Young Peoples Art and Creative Writing Competition, prizes were awarded to local schoolchildren from The King Edmund School by the Chairman of Rochford District Council, Cllr Robin Dray, for their exceptionally creative designs.
Class 7BS from The King Edmund School in Rochford secured first place! They have each been sent a Discover 2020 lapel pin and ‘The Beagle with Charles Darwin’ Book.
Cllr Robin Dray said “We received lots of very artistic entries, which goes to show how much talent we have in our District! With so many creative and inventive images it was hard for the Judges to choose a winner.
I especially enjoyed the excellent references to Darwin’s observations and the great use of colour and loved the ”did you know?” facts.
Class 7BS deserved to win for their efforts! A huge well done and that goes to all the classes who entered.”
HMS Beagle is synonymous with discovery in the fields of science, meteorology and even space exploration. Beagle’s five year voyage with Darwin and FitzRoy (1831-1836) is now famous for the ground breaking work that it achieved at the time and the history making thinking that it subsequently inspired. Darwin travelled the world onboard the HMS Beagle while collecting animal species and formulating his famous theory of evolution.
HMS Beagle’s linkage to the Rochford district has been formally acknowledged by Historic England listing as a scheduled monument the mud dock in Paglesham where the ship is believed to have been broken up.
