Chairman raises over £9,000 for charity

Cllr Robin Dray has donated a total of £9,901.49 towards the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) and the Alzheimer’s society. This was raised by Cllr Robin Dray during his 2019/2020 year as the Chairman of Rochford District Council.

Each year the incoming Chairman of the Council nominates one or more charities for which they promote and fundraise for during their term of office. Cllr Robin Dray, who continues to serve as Chairman, chose to support the RNLI in Rayleigh and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Throughout the year Cllr Dray organised various fundraising events to help raise this generous donation, including a charity curry night and a large raffle at the annual Civic Dinner.

Cllr Robin Dray said: “For years the RNLI has been one of my favourite charities. The thought of being on a boat in distress in the middle of the sea with no one there to assist is horrendous. I have much admiration for those who voluntarily risk their lives to rescue other people.”

“The Alzheimer’s society is a charity very close to me and my family. Providing information and support that creates lasting change for people affected by dementia.”

“All charities are struggling during this time and I hope that this will assist in a small way”

Terry Jobson from RNLI said “The volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, and seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches.”

"It costs around £483,000 a day to run this lifesaving service. We receive no government funding and rely purely on the generosity of the public. These donations mean the crews can save lives quickly, safely and effectively.”

Mussara Gray from Alzheimer’s society said “Every day, we work tirelessly to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure for dementia. This money will help us to continue to provide expert information, training, and support services to all those who need our help.”

“Everyone really appreciates the support shown by Cllr Robin Dray, Rochford District Council and the community of the Rochford district.”
